Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
