New research indicates that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
