On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
