Prime Small Screen Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Motion Pictures This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the tyranny of women's appearance as well as the feared consequences of growing older. Demi Moore offers a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a mysterious and terrifying treatment known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery includes Knightley as Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a break from writing about global conflict to join a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, and other affluent individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, on Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage embraces his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical film star playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a continuation. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has left the youth on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet the lead actress succeeds to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

The current week's another release from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as precise like the turtlenecks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to identify a traitor among the team from five suspects – among them is his spouse. Each performer are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of deception or honesty develops. The supporting cast take part the smart espionage amusement. This Friday, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
