No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
